Customs Clerk

This busy freight forwarding company based Milton Keynes, requires an experienced Customs Clerk to add to their freight department.

Job role
Preparation of Import & Export Customs documentation on behalf of Clients transporting products between the UK and EU & Rest of World enabling goods to enter or exit one country to another (import/export outside the EU), whilst ensuring all legal requirements are met in accordance with HMRC regulations.

Working alongside a team of freight forwarders the Customs Clerk will report to the Forwarding Operations Manager and be responsible for organising customs entries for clients specialised in the Healthcare & Pharmaceutical sector.

Key Duties include:

Collating and checking documents relating to import & export shipments

Signing of documents under a Power of Attorney on behalf of clients

Recognise client commercial invoice(s) and packing list(s) extracting data as necessary to complete import and export declarations

Liaising with importers/exporters and internal operational colleagues to obtain mandatory information for import and export entries

Aiding clients on the classification of goods and their importance

Entering details onto specialised software connecting to CHIEF/CDS

Preparation of necessary import/export documentation, including T-forms, EUR1’s, Certificates of Origin (CofO), CVED and other cargo control documents

Key skills and qualifications:

Previous experience of 3+ years working in a similar role

Excellent knowledge and understanding of the Customs tariff is required and application of the relevant procedures is essential.

Familiar with different export/import regimes and different modes of transport

Experience of using deferment accounts and  FAS payment systems

Formal training & detailed knowledge of customs import & export processes

Understanding of the impact of incorrect or false information in Customs declarations

Strong communication skills both written and verbal

Attention for detail as you will be required to compile documentation and be able to interpret the legal requirements on behalf of customers in a clear and simple way; high accuracy of record keeping

Strong interpersonal skills; confident communicator

Good problem solving capability & able to apply critical thinking skills; ability to actively listen and interpret information timely & accurately

Self-motivating and be able to organise your work effectively

Ability to operate windows based applications and any other software that is standard within the industry

Work in a fast paced environment ensuring clearance processes are completed in a compliant and timely manner

Excellent numerical skills are essential due to the calculation of VAT and Duty on behalf of HMRC


The company is looking to pay in the region from £25000 to £30000 aae, for the right applicant.
